  • Storing Couches? Self-Storage to the Rescue!

Storing Couches? Self-Storage to the Rescue!

For the storage needs of couches and other furniture, self-storage can be a blessing! It’s the perfect solution when you want to keep your stuff safe but don’t have enough space at home. Here are some tips that will help you make sure your couch stays clean and safe while it’s in storage, without costing you more than necessary.

    Pros of Storing Couches

If you don’t want to keep your couch in your home, storing it with a storage company can be a great alternative. There are lots of different benefits associated with self-storage facilities and moving couches there; here are just a few. This option allows for easy access: Whether you choose to store your sofa at our facility or somewhere else, one thing is for sure – self-storage provides convenient access whenever you need it again. The best way to ensure that everything stays safe and sound is by opting for storage facilities that offer 24/7 onsite management like Prestige Storage. This also eliminates worries about running into problems if it gets dark or bad weather sets in.

Another important thing to consider is cost. Depending on how long you plan on storing your furniture, you can often save money by choosing a storage facility that offers varying payment options. For example, if you know that it will only be a few months before you need your couch again, but don’t want to pay for an entire year upfront, Prestige Storage offers month-to-month or billing so you can pay as much or as little as you need and only worry about payment when it’s time to retrieve your couches.

Protecting Your Couch from Environmental Damage

While you’re not using your furniture, there are a few things you can do to help protect it from environmental damage. First, try not to place heavy objects on top of your couch or leave it out in direct sunlight or rain for extended periods. Second, keep air circulating on your couch and free from moisture; you can use a dehumidifier if need be.

Finally, it’s a good idea to periodically vacuum your couch and use a soft cloth to dust off any crumbs or dirt build-up. If you want your furniture in storage to look brand new when you bring it back out of storage, be sure that it’s completely dry before placing it in storage.

    When Storing Couches is Necessary

Couches are often heavy, unwieldy and can be a real pain to move. When it comes time to move, store or simply save space, they need some extra care when being transported or laid down for long periods. But with professional storage units like those offered by Prestige Storage, you don’t have to worry about these things at all. The professionals will handle it all for you.

  • Essential Supplies to Help Damage-Proof and Organise Your Self-Storage Unit

Essential Supplies to Help Damage-Proof and Organise Your Self-Storage Unit

When you’re packing up your belongings to move into a self-storage unit, it’s important to remember that the space is not your permanent home. As a result, you should take certain measures to protect your items from damage and make the most of the storage space.

Here are some essential supplies to help damage-proof and organise your self-storage unit:

    Packing Supplies

You’ll need high-quality packing supplies, such as sturdy boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, and tape. This will help to ensure that your belongings are well-protected while in storage.

    Bubble Wrap and Packing Peanuts

Bubble wrap and packing peanuts are great for protecting fragile items like dishes, glassware and picture frames. Simply wrap these items up tightly to prevent them from moving around and breaking.

    Permanent Markers

Permanent markers are essential for labeling boxes. It’s a good idea to label boxes with what’s inside, as well as the room it goes in. This will make unpacking a lot easier when you get to your new home.

    Duct Tape

Duct tape is perfect for fixing broken boxes and securing items that are liable to fall over. It’s also useful for taping down rugs or other large items that might slide around in your storage unit.

    Dust Mops and Brooms

Keeping your storage unit clean is important to prevent dust and dirt from damaging your belongings. A good dust mop or broom will help you keep the floors clean and free of debris.

    Tarpaulin

A tarp can be used to cover up items that are particularly susceptible to dust and dirt, like mattresses or upholstered furniture. This will help keep them clean and in good condition.

    Sturdy Boxes or Containers

To keep your storage unit organised, it’s a good idea to pack everything into sturdy boxes or containers. This will help to prevent items from getting damaged, and it will also make it easier to find what you’re looking for when you need it.

    Labels

When packing up your belongings, be sure to label each box or container with its contents. This will save you a lot of time and frustration when you’re trying to find something in your storage unit.

    Tape

Tape is essential for keeping your boxes and containers closed up tight. Make sure you have plenty of tape on hand so that you can keep everything safe and secure.

    Tape Guns

A tape gun is a great tool for quickly and easily packing up boxes. It will help you to get the job done quickly and efficiently. In stock at our on-site shop, they’re essential for anyone using self-storage.

    Flashlight

A flashlight is a must-have item when it comes to packing and unpacking your belongings in a self-storage unit. It’s also handy for finding things in your unit when the lights go out.

    A Lock

You should always lock your storage unit to keep your belongings safe. Be sure to choose a high-quality lock that will be difficult for thieves to break. Our storage shop has a wide range of quality and secure locks that will suit your storage unit and budget.

    Toolbox

Yes! A toolbox is important for damage-proofing your unit. It is a must-have for any self-storage unit. This will allow you to easily fix any problems that may arise, like broken door handles or leaky faucets.

    First Aid Kit

It’s always a good idea to keep a first aid kit in your storage unit, just in case. Be sure to include essential items like bandages, gauze, and antiseptic wipes.

    Fire Extinguisher

A fire extinguisher is a crucial item to have in your storage unit, as it can help to prevent fires from spreading. Be sure to choose a fire extinguisher that is rated for the size of your unit. However, many facilities already have one installed in the corridor and having your own would be an advantage.

  • The Hidden Cost of Self-Storage: Why You Need Insurance…

The Hidden Cost of Self-Storage: Why You Need Insurance…

When it comes to self-storage, there is one hidden cost that many people don’t think about: insurance. While your storage facility may have some insurance coverage, it is important to understand that this is usually not enough to protect your belongings.

Self-storage insurance is designed to cover your belongings in the event of damage or theft. While this may not seem like a big deal, it can actually be a lifesaver if something happens to your belongings. Here are a few reasons why you need insurance for your self-storage unit:

    Coverage for Damage or Theft

As mentioned above, one of the main reasons to have insurance for your self-storage unit is to protect your belongings in the event of damage or theft. If something happens to your belongings while they are in storage, you will be glad to have insurance coverage.

    Peace of Mind

When you have insurance for your self-storage unit, you can rest assured knowing that your belongings are protected. This can give you peace of mind and allow you to focus on other things.

    Affordable Protection

Self-storage insurance is very affordable, especially when you consider the protection it provides. If you are looking for an affordable way to protect your belongings, self-storage insurance is a great option.

    Protection Against Natural Disasters

While your storage facility may have some protection against natural disasters, it is important to understand that this is usually not enough. If you live in an area that is prone to floods or earthquakes, it is important to have self-storage insurance. This will protect your belongings in the event of a disaster. If you are looking for an affordable way to protect your belongings, self-storage insurance is a great option.

    Protection Against Liability

Another reason to have self-storage insurance is to protect against liability. If someone is injured while on your unit, you could be held liable. If you have insurance, you will be protected in the event of an accident.

Types of Insurance for Self-Storage Units in South Africa

There are many different types of insurance for self-storage units in South Africa. The type of insurance you need will depend on the value of your belongings and the level of protection you need. Here are a few of the most common types of insurance:

    • All-Risk Insurance

All-risk insurance is the most comprehensive type of insurance. It covers your belongings against all risks, except those specifically excluded in the policy. All-risk insurance is a great option if you have valuable belongings in your storage unit.

    • Specified Perils Insurance

Specified perils insurance is a less comprehensive type of insurance. It covers your belongings against a specific list of perils, such as fire, theft and vandalism. If you have less valuable belongings in your storage unit, specified perils insurance may be a good option.

    • Third-Party Liability Insurance

Third-party liability insurance protects you if someone is injured while on your property. If you have self-storage insurance with third-party liability coverage, you will be protected if someone is injured in your unit.

Now that you know the importance of self-storage insurance, you may be wondering how to get it. The best way to get self-storage insurance is to contact a company that specialises in it. Many companies offer self-storage insurance in South Africa.

To find a company that offers self-storage insurance, you can also search the internet or ask for recommendations from friends or family. Once you have found a few companies that offer self-storage insurance, you can compare their policies and prices to find the best option for you.

  • Why Does Your Business Need Document Storage? How to Find the Best Storage Facility…

Why Does Your Business Need Document Storage? How to Find the Best Storage Facility…

There are many reasons your company might need document storage. Perhaps you’re going through a reorganisation and have to store extra files temporarily. Maybe you’re expanding and need more space to keep your records. Or, you could simply be looking for a safe place to keep your important documents. No matter what the reason, it’s important to find the right document storage facility.

What is the Importance of Document Storage?

Document storage is important for a few key reasons. First, it can help you free up space in your office. This is especially helpful if you’re short of room or are in the process of remodelling. Secondly, it’s a safe way to store your documents. Many document storage facilities have security systems in place to protect your files. Finally, it can help you stay organised. When you have a place to store your documents, it’s easier to keep track of them and find what you need when you need it.

How do I Choose the Right Facility?

When choosing a document storage facility, there are a few things to consider.

    Size Matters

When looking for a document storage facility, size is something to consider. Make sure to find one that will be able to store all of your documents. Otherwise, you’ll just be wasting money.

    Is the Location Secure

Make sure the facility has a security system in place to protect your files. This is especially important if you’re storing sensitive information. In the absence of a security system, you might want to consider storing your documents elsewhere.

    Location

When choosing a document storage facility, also consider its location. Is it close enough to access it easily? Will it be easy for you to get to your documents when you need them? This is important if you need to access your files regularly.

    Ask About Climate Control

Many document storage facilities have climate control to protect your documents from damage. Make sure to ask about this before you choose a facility. Some facilities have special rooms that are temperature and humidity controlled, while others rely on air conditioning and heating to maintain a consistent climate. If you are storing items that are sensitive to changes in temperature or humidity, be sure to ask about climate control at the facility.

    Value Beats Cost

When choosing a document storage facility, it’s important to remember that value beats cost. Just because a facility is cheap doesn’t mean it’s the best option for you. Make sure to consider all of the factors listed above before making a decision.

Once you’ve chosen a document storage facility, it’s important to make sure you use it effectively. Here are a few tips:

    1. Label Your Files Correctly

When you store your documents, make sure to label them correctly. This will make it easier for you to find what you need when you need it.

    2. Create a System

When you store your documents, create a system for yourself. This will make it easier to find what you need and keep track of your files.

    3. Use the Storage Facility Often

The more you use your document storage facility, the easier it will be to keep track of your documents. Make sure to use it often to keep everything organised.

    4. Keep a Copy of Your Documents Somewhere Else

It’s always a good idea to keep a copy of your documents somewhere else. This way, if something happens to your files at the document storage facility, you still have a backup. When it comes to document storage, your company needs to find the right facility for its needs.

Reduce Document Storage Risks with These Tips

When it comes to storing your documents, it’s important to take some precautions to protect them. Here are a few tips:

    • Store Sensitive Documents in a Secure Facility

If you’re storing sensitive information, make sure to store it in a secure facility. This will help protect your data from theft or accidental destruction.

    • Use a Fireproof Safe

If you’re storing documents that could be damaged by fire, use a fireproof safe. This will help protect your documents in the event of a fire.

    • Store Your Documents in a Cool, Dry Place

If you’re storing documents that could be damaged by water or humidity, store them in a cool, dry place. This will help protect your documents from damage.

    • Use a Barcode Scanner to Track Your Documents

If you’re storing a lot of documents, use a barcode scanner to track them. This will make it easier for you to find what you need when you need it.

    • Regularly Backup Your Documents

It’s always a good idea to regularly backup your documents. This way, if something happens to them at the document storage facility, you still have a copy.

When it comes to document storage, there are a few things to take into consideration. Make sure to choose a facility that is close to you, has climate control, and is secure. You also want to make sure to label your files correctly and create a system for yourself. When you have a system, you’re more likely to use the facility often and keep your documents organised. Lastly, make sure to backup your documents regularly. This way, you won’t lose any information if something happens to your files at the storage facility.

  • How Can Your Small Business Maximize Its Self-Storage Unit Space?

How Can Your Small Business Maximize Its Self-Storage Unit Space?

Self-storage is a great way for small businesses to boost their overall storage capacity and security. With more and more people getting involved in business, the need for extra storage space is growing — but business owners may not have enough room on-site to accommodate all of their stock. With some creative thinking and some tweaks to your usual setup, your business can make the most out of your self-storage unit and save you money in the long run. Here are some tips on how to maximise your storage space.

Factor in the Size of Your Goods

The way we measure, describe and talk about self-storage spaces might seem a little odd but it’s all relative to what you’re trying to store! To avoid any confusion, brace yourself for a few odd measurements. When we say “unit size” or “space”, this is your allocated space in the storage facility which is usually 10ft x 20ft – so you might have a 5×10 unit, a 10×20 unit and so on. As another point of reference, a 10ft x 20ft unit is equivalent to 1 “cubic” (not cubic as in champagne but as in length x width x height) feet. For example, a 10 x 20 unit is equal to 200 cubic feet.

Make the Most of Your Unit

Now it’s time to get organised! The number one rule about self-storage is that everything must be put in its place and stored neatly. This way you can keep track of everything and use the space to your advantage. It doesn’t have to be perfect but a well-organised unit will allow you to know what can fit in each corner, as it’s much easier to move smaller items around than large ones.

    Make Room for Tall Items

If you have any tall or bulky items, the best place to store them is towards the ceiling. This will free up space at floor level for your smaller stock so you can keep everything well-organised and accessible. It’s always a good idea to label your boxes with their contents to ensure nothing gets lost or mixed up. For even more storage space, you can also lean larger items against the walls or at the back of your unit.

    Take Advantage of Extra Features

If you have an additional mezzanine floor in your unit, you’ll find it’s a great way to store anything that will fit in there! You could place any boxes, furniture, bikes and other equipment that you don’t need at the moment but still want to keep for future use.

    Keep Your Storage Unit Well-maintained

If your unit is not used often then we recommend that you air it once a month – this will maintain fresher conditions and prevent any mildew or mould from developing. You should also make a routine of checking on your unit once every few months to make sure it’s still secure and nothing has been damaged. If you’re storing any items that are on higher shelves, just use a broom handle to knock them down so they don’t get stuck or hard to reach. Make sure you don’t store anything illegal or dangerous!

Don’t Pack Your Unit to the Brim

Many people store their goods to the max to save money but it comes at a cost. If you’re always having to stack boxes, then it can become very difficult when you want something specific. Packing your unit too tightly will also increase any risks of damage or injury during a move. If you need a little more space, it will pay to get a slightly larger unit and try using some of the tips above to maximise its full potential.

    Keep Stock in Smaller Containers

Large containers may seem like a great bargain for bulk storage, but they make it difficult to find the item you need when you need it. If you’re looking for a certain wire or cable, would you rather dig through a large container and risk not finding what you want in time, or open several smaller containers with ease?

    Label Your Containers Clearly

This is a simple task that can save you time while also helping to keep organised down the road. Would you rather spend 15-minutes tearing every cupboard apart looking for the right wire, or simply open up one container and grab the item needed in seconds? Labelling solves both of these problems.

Consider Getting Another Small Business to Share the Space

If you outgrow your current storage space and need more room, consider renting a locker or room at a shared warehouse facility with other businesses. This is also an effective way to keep track of your inventory at all times without having it directly in your store location. Using this method, you can keep a small amount in your business location and have the rest stored at the warehouse so you always have access when you need it.

Don’t Waste Time or Money Storing Items You Don’t Need

Take a good look at your inventory and determine what you use regularly. If multiple products sit for months without being handled, consider culling the excess so you can free up space for important stock. You’ll be happier with how much room you have, and your employees will thank you for not making them dig through piles of useless items.

Make the Most of Your Self-Storage Space

One of the most important factors in self-storage is using your unit space to its full advantage. By keeping these few points in mind, you’ll be able to make sure that everything will fit and there’s still room for manoeuvres – all within a small space! Eventually, you’ll get to know the ins and outs of your unit so that you can find space for just about anything. And if not, then it might be time for an upgrade to something bigger.

    And Finally…

At Prestige Storage, we have a great range of self-storage units available in many sizes – we’ve got the perfect space for your business so check out our website for more information or give us a call.

  • Simple Life Hacks to Make Your Self-Storage Work Better for You

Simple Life Hacks to Make Your Self-Storage Work Better for You

So you’ve gotten to the point in your life where you need to rent a self-storage unit. Congratulations! That’s quite an accomplishment, especially when you consider that your family is probably twice as big as when you first moved out of your mom and dad’s house. Now if only there was some sort of guidebook for what to do next that could make this whole self-storage thing a little easier, right?

Well, good news! There is. We’ve put together a list of simple life hacks to help you with storing your stuff. Before we get started, though, there’s something else we want to tell you: if you haven’t already done so, now might be a good time to make sure you know how much storage space you really need.

Once that’s out of the way, it’s time to get started on some life hacks! (Note: we recommend printing this article and checking off each step as you complete them.)

Life Hack #1: Keep a Stowaway Box Handy

Make sure to keep one box labelled “Stowaway” that you can use whenever you acquire new things. You don’t have to worry about what goes where, just tuck it into the back of your storage unit. When the Stowaway Box is full, you’re probably ready to upgrade your storage unit.

Life Hack #2: Make Your Own “Moving Day” Box

Every family member gets a box that they can fill up with the things they need for their big move. Then, on moving day, you’ll have everything you need in one place and won’t have to go rifling through all of your boxes looking for that one box of cereal you’ll need before the movers show up.

Life Hack #3: Store Furniture on its Side, Not Flat

Furniture looks better on its side than it does flat, so get your storage unit ready by storing all of your furniture on its side rather than making it stand up straight. On the other hand, make sure to stand any items with legs up on their own, lest they fall over under their own weight.

Life Hack #4: Think Outside the Box

This is an easy one, but it’s important. Think outside the box when you’re buying your storage unit. Consider how much space you’ll need in 10 years when your kids are all gone and it’s just you living there alone (or maybe with a pet that’s gotten big enough to eat half of your stuff).

Life Hack #5: Sort Your Items as You Put Them Into Storage

This one’s a little bit tricky, but it’ll save you time and energy in the long run. As you place items into your storage unit, sort them as you go. The sooner you know where everything is, the less likely you’ll be to lose something important.

Life Hack #6: Take Inventory of Your Storage Unit Once a Month

Some self-storage facilities, like Prestige Storage, have packing supplies that they sell to their customers, but not all do. Make sure you’re never caught without the proper supplies by taking inventory of your storage unit once a month. This way, if you need something, you can buy it before you lose it.

Life Hack #7: Store Like With Like

Make sure that you’re storing like with like when you’re packing your storage unit. For example, group all of your kitchen supplies together and label the label with a marker or piece of tape (you didn’t think we were going to make you go buy labels for this, did you?).

Life Hack #8: Label Your Boxes On All Sides

This is another one that you might need packing supplies for, depending on the storage facility. Label all your boxes so that you know what’s in each one. You’ll thank yourself later when it comes time to unpack. It’ll also make unpacking less stressful because you won’t be wondering where things go.

Life Hack #9: Don’t Forget to Label the Top of Taller Boxes

If you’ve ever had a tall box with something small and delicate on top that you forgot to label, then this one’s for you. Always make sure that at least one side of your taller boxes is labelled so that moving day doesn’t end in tears because someone accidentally dropped your television on a foot.

Life Hack #10: Decorate Your Storage Unit With Family Photos

This one’s personal, but it really does work wonders if you plan to be storing something for a long time. Make sure that at least some of your family photos are visible from the outside of your storage unit. For example, if you’re storing your winter clothes, tuck some photos in with them so that you can remember what family members were still around when it was warm enough to wear those sweaters and boots.

Life Hack #11: Don’t Store Valuables Without Insurance

No matter how much you trust your storage facility, never store valuables without insurance. If you’re storing anything of value, like your grandmother’s old china or that television you bought on Black Friday because it was unexpectedly discounted, make sure to protect yourself with insurance. It may seem like a waste of money now, but think about how much money you’d save if something happened to your storage unit and everything inside.

Life Hack #12: Store Liquids Separately

This is a no-brainer, but it’s important enough to mention. If you decide to store liquids in your unit, make sure that they’re stored separately. Liquids are heavy and they’ll take up space you could better use for something else. Plus, if they spill or explode (depending on what they are), you don’t want them spilling on everything else.

Life Hack #13: Only Store Things That Won’t Spill

This is another one that’s not specific to self-storage, but it’s still important. If you’re storing liquids, then make sure they can’t spill easily (although we all know that things like milk and juice do end up spilling sooner or later). It might seem like a pain to go through each box to pull out the liquids so that they’re stored separately, but it’ll be worth it if your clothes or other belongings are damaged.

Life Hack #14: Be Sure to Use Dividers

Dividers can help you organise your unit and make sure nothing’s getting lost. They’re especially helpful if you don’t have much storage space, because you can use them to set separate sections for winter coats, summer clothes, camping gear, etc. Plus, the more you fill up your unit with dividers and other storage units, the less chance there is of something falling over onto something else while you’re storing it.

Life Hack #15: Keep the Doors Open When Moving In and Out

If you’re storing things for a long time, it might be tempting to keep your unit’s doors closed. Don’t do this! Keep those doors open as much as possible. It’ll save you money because you won’t go over the allotted time limit, and if something does happen to your stuff, it’s easier to see what’s missing if all the doors are open.

Life Hack #16: Use Your Own Padlocks

This one’s linked to Life Hack #15, but it needs its own entry. When you’re moving into a self-storage unit, use your own padlocks. If you don’t, then there’s no guarantee that your stuff will still be there when you return. There are horror stories of people renting units and putting their belongings in, only to come back and find they’ve been stolen or vandalised. You don’t want to be that person, so bring your own padlocks and lock the doors behind you.

And that’s it! Those are the best self-storage life hacks we could find. There might be more out there, so let us know if you know of any and we’ll add them to the list!

  • Storing Electronics and Devices in a Self-Storage Unit? Keep Them Secure and Organised with These Tips

Storing Electronics and Devices in a Self-Storage Unit? Keep Them Secure and Organised with These Tips

Whether you are storing electronics, furniture, clothes, sports equipment or any other item, there are important steps to take to organise your storage unit so that everything is safe and secure. If this sounds overwhelming because of the number of items being stored, hire a self-storage company to provide you with the best value for money. They will ensure that your storage unit is safe and sound.

Here are some tips for storing your electronics and devices in a self-storage unit

    1. Remove the power supply from all electronic devices, including consoles, TVs, DVD players, computer equipment etc. If possible, pack them up so that you can remove the items once they have been placed in storage. This will prevent any unnecessary damage to the equipment and will also save you money in the long run.
    1. If possible, store electronic equipment in its original packaging to protect it from dust and other contaminants that can cause damage or malfunctioning. If your storage facility does not provide plastic protective materials for individual items, place them inside a small bag before they are placed in boxes so that they don’t get scratched or damaged.
    1. Keep track of all the serial numbers and receipts for electronic equipment that is being stored, in case there is a loss or theft. This will allow you to report the items that are missing quickly and easily. It is also a good idea to take photographs of all your electronic equipment, just in case it becomes damaged during storage. Keep the photographs and serial numbers in a secure location, such as your home safe.
    1. Store all DVDs and CDs inside CD storage cases or DVD bags to protect them from dust and scratches that can damage the discs. As above, ensure that they are stored away from any contaminants. If you do not have these on hand already, it is a good idea to keep them stored in a fairly airtight container so that they are not exposed to dust.
    1. Ensure that all electronic equipment is plugged into an outlet and turned off before it is placed into storage, as this will prevent damage or power surges during the storage period.
    1. Place all video games consoles and other electronic equipment which are plugged in, into surge protectors before being stored to prevent any power surges that could damage them.
    1. Store all digital cameras in self-storage units with antistatic bags to protect them from dust and other contaminants. These are fairly inexpensive items that will ensure that your camera remains clean, working and ready for use after storage is complete. If you cannot find antistatic bags, simply place your camera inside a resealable bag that has holes cut out for the lens and charger.
    1. Before storing electronics with liquids in them or food that can attract insects, ensure that everything is completely dry. These items will need to be sealed inside airtight containers like Tupperware bottles to stop ants and other insects which can damage them and ruin the food.
    1. For added protection of videos, DVDs, CDs and other items which are stored in boxes, cover the bottom of the box with bubble wrap before placing the item inside. This will help protect it from damage or malfunction due to any sharp objects that may be in your storage unit.
    1. If you have expensive electronics such as TVs, DVD players etc, ensure that they are not placed in storage units where other people may have access to them. If possible, avoid renting a public self-storage facility and rent a unit that has an exclusive code or key which can only be accessed by you.

Preventing damage and theft of items is the main concern for anyone who has electronic equipment stored away. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your electronic equipment is safely stored and emerges from storage in the same condition as it was before.

  • What Items Cannot Be Stored in Your Self-Storage Unit

What Items Cannot Be Stored in Your Self-Storage Unit

Sometimes it can be tricky to figure out what items should and shouldn’t be stored in a self-storage unit. Take a look at this list for some general guidelines about what items you should avoid storing if possible.

    Weapons and/or Ammunition

The storage of weapons and ammunition is illegal in South Africa. If you must store these items, it’s best to check with your facility beforehand. If they do allow it, your items must be stored securely and safely.

    Illegal Materials and/or Goods

It is illegal to store certain goods and materials in a self-storage unit, including narcotics, drugs and pornographic materials; while some facilities do allow these things, you should check with yours beforehand. You don’t want to get in trouble for having illegal things stored on the facility property.

    Jewellery and/or Money

Storing valuable items, including jewellery and money, is one of the most common concerns about self-storage units. These are some things to consider when storing these types of valuables:

    • Do not leave jewellery or cash in your home if you’re planning on renting a storage unit for regular household goods. Thieves might break into your home to get to your valuables and you want them to be safe!
    • If you plan on keeping jewellery, money or other high-value items at the facility, it’s best to rent an individual storage unit for those items alone or use a larger unit and then divide up what needs to be stored separately with boxes/padding so the facility staff cannot see what’s inside.

    Pornography and Nudity

Please note that for legal reasons, pornographic material and nudity can’t be stored in a self-storage unit in South Africa. Some facilities do allow these things, but be sure to thoroughly check with your facility beforehand so you don’t get in trouble for having illegal goods on the property.

    High-Tech Equipment/Computers

You should avoid storing high-tech equipment and computers in self-storage units because they are very susceptible to damage from power surges or other electrical problems.

    Perishable Goods or Materials

Some goods must be kept at a certain temperature to prevent spoilage – perishable goods such as food and medicine, for example. It’s best to avoid storing these items if they can’t be kept at a proper storage temperature.

    Dangerous Goods

Some goods are so dangerous that they cannot be stored anywhere, such as combustible items like petrol, diesel, gas canisters or paint thinners. These types of goods will result in additional fees if found within the facility and whoever is storing them will be responsible for the costs.

Please consult your facility manager to determine whether or not you can store these items before purchasing a unit. While it’s always good to ask, some facilities might have different rules about what should and shouldn’t be stored, so make sure to verify first!

Some goods are commonly stored in self-storage units, but really should not be – these include flammable materials. Be sure to avoid storing any type of flammable or potentially dangerous goods to prevent problems for both yourself and the facility.

    Counterfeit Money or Goods

Fake items are considered illegal to have, so it’s best not to store them in your self-storage unit. While some might be allowed if they are carefully packaged and clearly labelled as fake, staff members are trained to spot fake items so you might get into trouble for having these types of goods on the property.

While there are always exceptions to the rules, the items listed above are not allowed in self-storage units due to potential safety hazards. It’s best to check with your facility manager before renting a unit. If you aren’t sure about something, just remove it from your household goods list before moving forward.

The Rules Are There to Protect Everyone

While it sucks to have to look over your household goods list before moving, the rules are there for your safety and the facility’s staff members. If you forget about something, don’t assume that because staff members don’t say anything immediately it will be okay. You can get into trouble just as easily if they find out later.

Remember that the rules are there to protect you and your household goods, so be sure to follow them. Of course, you can always refer to your facility’s rental agreement to double-check all the items that are not allowed in storage units. Be sure to thoroughly read through any rules and regulations before renting a unit as well.
